People meditate for many different reasons – to relieve stress, curb negative emotions, as part of a spiritual path etc. Whatever your meditation goals are, biofeedback machines and other mind technology can greatly enhance your meditation and help you achieve your desired results much faster. In this article, we’ll examine some of the best meditation machines available, and we’ll also take a look at what you can realistically expect from technology-enhanced meditation.
A shortcut to Awakening?
One question that I often get asked is: “Will using these machines lead to spiritual awakening?”
Well, yes and no. Asking a question like that is a bit like asking “will this hammer build me a house?” It is important to realize that biofeedback and mind machines are just tools – and just like with any other tool, you have to know how to use it and then actually use it.
What mind technology excels at is relaxing you, stilling the mind, and quickly changing your state of consciousness, and this can be a huge boost for your spiritual progress. Stilling the mind is, as I’m sure you know, something that many meditators struggle with the most.
But in and of itself, having a quiet mind does not necessarily mean that you’ll experience an awakening. If we take the word “awakening” to mean realizing the truth of who you are beyond body and mind, you will still have to discover that for yourself through introspection and contemplation. Having said that, being able to switch off the incessant chatter of the mind with technology makes the whole process a whole lot easier and quicker.
It seems quite funny to me that some “spiritual” people are opposed to mind technology as if it was somehow “cheating” or “not spiritual”. The truth is that humans have used technology for spiritual purposes throughout the ages – whether it’s drums, music, imagery, incense, lights or drugs. Also, once you realize the truth of existence, it becomes clear that in reality there is no separation between the spiritual and material. That’s just a man-made distinction.
The best meditation machines
So which device should you choose? A biofeedback machine or a mind machine? And which one is the best?
The answer to that question largely depends on what you hope to achieve, your meditation experience, and your personality. Mind machines like the procyon AVS are great for instantaneous relaxation, exploring altered states of consciousness, and stilling the mind, but some people (especially long time meditators) find them somewhat invasive because using them involves wearing goggles and earphones. Over time and with daily use, a mind machine like the procyon has huge benefits though – as years of accumulated stress gradually dissolves and neurochemicals like endorphins are released in greater quantities you’ll quickly feel more balanced and experience a greater sense of wellbeing. A mind machine is also an amazing tool for visualization techniques and self hypnosis as it allows you to simply “dial in” the most effective brainwave frequency.
Mind machines won’t teach you how to meditate, but they can let you enter meditative states very quickly and easily.
Biofeedback machines are more unobtrusive and quiet, and can be used to enhance traditional meditation techniques. A biofeedback device doesn’t change your brainwaves or state of consciousness. All that it does, is give feedback on the state of consciousness you are in, and this enables you to improve your meditation skills in an effortless way. The two biofeedback systems that I like best for meditation are the emWave2 by HeartMath and Wild Divine. I personally use the emWave2 the most because it can be used connected to the computer or as a standalone unit, which makes it highly portable and enables me to meditate with it wherever I find myself.
I also love the Wild Divine though. It’s an amazing system, especially if you’re new to meditation or to teach children how to meditate in a playful way, and Wild Divine’s wonderful meditation teachers and spiritual masters lift this meditation machine to a whole new level.
